Ravi Sharma (Dalip Tahil), an Indian ex-patriot who now works as a taxi driver in New York, has a vision to build a school for girls in the village he grew up in, after his mother, on her death bed, confesses that she received no formal education.
The girls of his former Indian village are without education due to historical attitudes and practicalities. Hanuman, head of the Panchyat and a respected figurehead in the community, is still angry with Sharma because of the shame brought on him when Sharma stole his childhood sweetheart for his bride. Bureaucracy and a fierce determination to protect local culture block Sharma’s efforts as he battles to get the school ready for its opening, helped by a former missionary, Reverend Webster (Billy Connolly).
